Hospital Admissions Spike as COVID-19 Cases Surge in Singapore. KP.1 and KP.2 Make Up Over Two-Thirds of Cases
Singapore is experiencing a significant spike in COVID-19 cases, with the numbers doubling from the previous week. Between May 5th and 11th, the country recorded a staggering 25,900 cases, a sharp increase from the 13,700 cases reported the week before. This surge has also led to a rise in hospitalizations, with an average of 250 daily admissions, up from 181. However, the situation in Intensive Care Units (ICU) remains relatively stable, with an average of three cases compared to two in the prior week.
The Ministry of Health (MOH) is vigilantly monitoring this new wave. To safeguard hospital resources, public hospitals have been directed to reduce non-urgent elective surgeries and relocate suitable patients to alternative care facilities, such as Transitional Care Facilities or the Mobile Inpatient Care @Home program.
On the global front, KP.1 and KP.2, continue to dominate. In Singapore, KP.1 and KP.2 make up over two-thirds of the current COVID-19 cases. The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified KP.2 as a Variant Under Monitoring as of May 3rd, 2024.
TACT called attention to KP.2 almost 2 months before the W.H.O., saying on March 16, 2024, that “This variant (KP.2) has been sequenced in multiple states in the U.S. and a dozen countries around the world. If it continues to expand its prevalence at the current pace it could become a dominant variant within the next couple of months.”
The U.S. will likely cross the 50% prevalence threshold within the next week or two. History has shown that once prevalence increases above 60%, new immune escape variants start having a greater, more obvious impact.
The difference this time around is that due to extremely high immune escape, secondary infections may be the first sign of a current or recent KP.2 infection.
KP.3 is gaining ground quickly on the heals of KP.2 variants and has new mechanisms to evade and hijack immune cells.
