It is becoming increasingly apparent that EG.5.1 variant is a bit more dangerous than prior variants, if not much more dangerous. The hospitalizations have bottomed out and starting to increase in the U.S. and the U.K. as Japan is seeing exponential growth of hospitalized patients.
Be forewarned that this variant carries many of the Delta variant mutations plus many other immune evasion/suppressive mutations.
To read more on this you can read the July 19th update.

U.S. Wastewater Prevalence
The National wastewater prevalence continues to increase. (Above))
At the local level some places show a slight decrease while others have modest increases and some are surging higher than ever. This is likely due to the dominant variant in place in a particular area. EG.5.1 is increasing in the U.S. and around the world so at any point a seed case can be introduced locally and start spreading quickly.
COVID & Cancer
1. "We show convergent evidence from three different transcriptomic datasets and techniques that represent a molecular proof of concept that p53 may be acutely and persistently reduced after severe SARS-CoV-2 infection. A persistent reduction of the p53 tumor suppression functions, as might be the case in long-COVID-19 severe patients, may constitute a risk factor for oncogenesis comparable to pathogenic mutations in TP53. Such long-term reduction of p53 might trigger cancer onset or contribute to worsen the course of patients with an ongoing tumoral process."

2. TP53 gene - Tumor protein p53
"The TP53 gene provides instructions for making a protein called tumor protein p53 (or p53). This protein acts as a tumor suppressor, which means that it regulates cell division by keeping cells from growing and dividing (proliferating) too fast or in an uncontrolled way."
"The p53 protein is located in the nucleus of cells throughout the body, where it attaches (binds) directly to DNA. When the DNA in a cell becomes damaged by agents such as toxic chemicals, radiation, or ultraviolet (UV) rays from sunlight, this protein plays a critical role in determining whether the DNA will be repaired or the damaged cell will self-destruct (undergo apoptosis). If the DNA can be repaired, p53 activates other genes to fix the damage. If the DNA cannot be repaired, this protein prevents the cell from dividing and signals it to undergo apoptosis. By stopping cells with mutated or damaged DNA from dividing, p53 helps prevent the development of tumors."
Because p53 is essential for regulating DNA repair and cell division, it has been nicknamed the "guardian of the genome."

White House Opens Permanent Pandemic Preparedness Office
The Office of Pandemic Preparedness and Response Policy launched on Friday with retired Major General Paul Friedrichs at the helm. The new effort will take over the federal response to covid and mpox and look ahead to future health crises.

Note:
This post was quickly done due to time constraints so please excuse the formating of links and any potential grammar errors. Hopefully EG.5.1 isn't much more dangerous in the acute phase but it important for people to know so didn’t want to delay on publishing it. Make no mistake, evolution continues at a rapid pace and it is evolving to better evade and suppress the immune system. Every infection carries a lot of risk so the most important thing we can do is avoid infection if at all possible. N-95 masks are a very effective level of personal protection. Increasing air filtration and ventilation is so important, especially in schools.
More updates coming soon.
Hi TACT...
Check out the site below, scroll down and be sure to select both Florida and New Jersey. Looks like quite the show. Sure would like to know what variants are circulating in Miami...lots of tourists.
There is another contender out there punching above its weight...FL.1.5.1
